Hello Bridge friend!
This is the third in a series of newsletters from Topbridge.
This time I would like to give you some hints on bidding after partners
1NT opening or overcall.

System
Answers to 1NT opening or overcall.
2Clubs = Stayman
2Diamonds / 2Hearts / 2Spades / 3Clubs = 4 Way Transfers
2NT = Invitational
Stayman is used to locate 4-4 fit in major after 1NT - opening
or overcall
1NT
2Clubs = Stayman
2Diamonds
= no 4 card major
2Hearts
= 4 card hearts (may also have 4 card spades)
2Spades
= 4card spades, (denying 4 card hearts)
After 1NT opening or overcall, 4 Way Transfers are used to
make the strong hand declearer. With 5+ hearts you bid 2Diamonds. With
5+ spades you bid 2Hearts. 2Spades is a transfer to clubs(6+), and 3Clubs
is a transfer to diamonds(6+).
A jump to 3Hearts, 3Spades, 4Clubs or 4Diamonds after partners
1NT is forcing with
6+ cards. A transfer bid followed by 3 in major or 4 in minor
is invitational. A direct jump
1NT - 4NT is invitational to 6NT.
NOTE: Keep within the limits of the 1NT opening(15-17 balanced)
and overcall(15-18 balanced). Your partner will make his judgement
based upon these facts.
When opponents interfere !!
This change the situation and we have to switch the system
off!!!!
If you hold a medium to strong hand in these situations you
have some possibilities depending on opponents action. You can redouble
their double or cue-bid their overcall suite with a strong hand. A
double of an overcall is for penalty.
If you hold a weak hand you have to keep the bidding on the
lowest possible level.
For this you need 2Clubs,2Diamonds,2Hearts and 2Spades as
naturale nonforcing bids after opponents double.
If opponents interfere with an overcall of e.g. 2Diamonds,
you will need 2Hearts as a fight for contract.
